interiors: house dreaming

i've been an apartment gal for so long

but recently we've been talking about houses.

i'm dreaming of painting walls-

soft, layered, hazy.

i'm dreaming of breakfast nooks,

with thonet chairs and marble tabletops.

just big enough for a scone, a latte, and a notepad.

thinking of open shelving-

and ample space to display my dishware collections.

(and a cupboard or two for things that are best out of sight).

thinking about bedrooms

that are light and airy like clouds...

with draping, swathes of fabric,

and crisp white sheets.

and dark like caves.

perfect for hibernating at night

and throwing open the window in the morning.

(i still need convincing on the all dark, bedroom cave...

but if i did go for it, the paint finish would have to be matte/flat

and there would have to be a very bright window!)

what do you daydream about?

what's your ideal house style?

i'll be posting more inspiration pictures

and sharing some of my current apt stylings

as the new topic 'interiors'

grows on the blog!

patterns: sashiko, embroidery & mending stitches

sashiko (japanese embroidery), embroidery stitches and mending stitches are so filled with lush texture and layers of pattern, that they are my must-share this week.

use these images to inspire a unique take on the top stitching of your next quilt, repairing a hole in your denim, or to enhance your next embroidery project.

or simply be inspired by the texture!

artists that inspire: maria grossman

before the days of pinterest - i, like many artists i know, would log my inspirations in folders on my computer. piles of gorgeous images that were sorted into folders. the folders have been now been elevated to my ever growing collection of pinterest boards and with organization, the inspiration is so much easier to track down and to develop into new inspiring images to add to the stockpile.

but, b.p. (before pinterest), i had folders on my desktop, folders in folders, images all scattered together, seemingly random images that all evoked emotion or sparked ideas.

and when i was recently searching through my hard drive to find a photograph for my portfolio website... i found a folder filled with images from a stylist i had admired and neglected to share here. and so, let's correct that.

maria grossman is a german based food and still life stylist. she has a masterful way of layering subtle textures and creating a still life image, with such depth, that your eye lingers and your mind wanders. if you haven't heard her name before, you may recognize her work.

before i even really understood what a stylist was, and before i started forming a board of still life images (of small moments and little vignettes), i saved these images.  maria grossman's work is visually breathtaking and compositionally interesting, and she's definitely an artist that inspires.

i hope you enjoy these still life images as much i as do.
